Beginning June 1, travelers returning to the
U.S.
by land or sea from
Canada,
Mexico,
Bermuda
or the
Caribbean
must have a passport, passport card or other federally approved document to enter the country. This requirement is part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), which was enacted to heighten border security.
In the near future, select Secretary of State offices
will begin offering residents an optional enhanced driver's license or state identification card to comply with WHTI. When available, it is anticipated that thousands of travelers and commercial drivers that cross the U.S.-Canadian border daily will take advantage of this option. Interested parties include those that travel for business purposes, sports groups, hunting and fishing clubs and outdoor recreation groups. At $45 for the enhanced driver's license and $30 for the state identification card, these will be cost-effective and convenient documents that can be used for driving, identification and border-crossing purposes.
Any
Michigan
resident who is a
U.S.
citizen may apply for an enhanced license or ID card. Interested parties are encouraged to locate an original or certified copy of their birth certificate as this document will be helpful in the application process.
