Replacing a Lost or Stolen Driver's License - In State
At a Secretary of State Office
If your standard or enhanced driver's license is lost or stolen, you may
visit any Secretary of State office to apply for a replacement. You will need
to present identification to substantiate your identity. A lost or stolen
enhanced license is immediately canceled and cannot be used for border-crossing
purposes.
Online
You may replace your lost or stolen standard license online through
ExpressSOS if you are a U.S. citizen with a valid Social Security number and
your license has not expired or been canceled. Replacing your license online is
convenient and saves time. This service is not yet available for enhanced
driver's licenses.

Replacing a Lost or Stolen Driver's License - Out
of State
By Mail or Fax
If you are traveling in the U.S. and lose your standard or enhanced license,
complete a
Duplicate Driver License Application and mail or fax it to the
Department of State Out-of-State Resident Services Unit to request a replacement
and obtain a temporary permit.
Complete each section of the application as directed. If paying by credit card,
include the credit card information in the payment method section of the
application and fax a printed copy of the application to (517) 322-5438. If
paying by check or money order, print the completed application and mail it with
a check or money order (made payable to the State of Michigan) to the address
provided below.
If
you are replacing a standard license and do not have a Social Security number,
you must provide a letter of ineligibility from the Social Security
Administration and proof of legal presence.
Online
You also have the option of replacing a lost, damaged or stolen standard
license online through
ExpressSOS. You
must be a U.S. citizen with a valid Social Security number to replace a license
online. Replacement licenses will only be mailed to your residential address.
Online replacement is not yet available for enhanced licenses.

Replacing a Lost or Stolen Driver's License -
Outside of the U.S.
Standard license: If you are traveling outside of the U.S. and lose your
standard license, complete a Duplicate Driver License Application and follow the
instructions provided for Michigan residents traveling in the U.S. Military
personnel outside of the U.S. must include their APO/FPO address in the out of
state mailing address portion of the application. You also have the
option of replacing a lost, damaged or stolen standard license online through
ExpressSOS. You
must be a U.S. citizen with a valid Social Security number. Replacement licenses
can only be mailed to your residential address and not to an out-of-state
address. Online license replacement is not yet available for enhanced licenses.
Enhanced
license:
Contact the U.S. Embassy in the country you are visiting or U.S. Customs and
Border Protection when you arrive at your U.S. port. The enhanced license is one
of the federally accepted travel documents for re-entering the U.S. by land or
sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean
Correcting a Driver's License
Corrections to your
address may be completed online through
ExpressSOS or
at a Secretary of State office. There is no fee for a change of address. Other
corrections must be submitted at a branch office and include changing your name
or date of birth, or adding and dropping endorsements and Commercial Driver
License group designations. Fees will be based on the license type. If you are
submitting a correction at a branch office, be sure to bring your license.

Name Changes
If you need to change
your name on your valid driver's license you must present it with proof of the
name change. Proof of your name change must be established through an official
record, such as a certified marriage license, divorce decree or a legal name
change document. A fee will be charged to correct your name and a new
photograph will be taken.
