Teen Driver Education Curriculum

The Secretary of State has prescribed a model curriculum for teen driver education instruction (MCL 256.655). The Driver Education Curriculum Guide, which can be found on the website, provides an outline of the instruction for Segment 1 (both classroom and behind-the-wheel), and Segment 2 (classroom).

CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION OUTLINE (Segment 1)

If a provider applicant plans on following the Segment 1 model curriculum as prescribed by the Secretary of State, the applicant need only provide a written verification that the provider will utilize and follow the Segment 1 model curriculum as prescribed by the Secretary of State. If it is the intent by the applicant to utilize an alternative curriculum, the Secretary of State may approve the use of an alternative curriculum if it substantially meets or exceeds the standards of the Secretary of State's model curriculum. A detailed outline of the alternative curriculum must be submitted upon application, along with copies of all materials, handouts, etc. that will be used.

CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION OUTLINE (Segment 2)

If a provider applicant plans on following the Segment 2 model curriculum as prescribed by the Secretary of State, the applicant need only provide a written verification that the provider will utilize and follow the Segment 2 model curriculum as prescribed by the Secretary of State.
