SOS offices closed for Veterans Day, holidays

October 23, 2002

Secretary of State Candice S. Miller announced today that all 173 Secretary of State branch offices will be closed in observance of state holidays during November and December.  The branch offices will be closed for:

  • Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 11;
  • Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29;
  • Christmas on Tuesday, Dec. 24 and Wednesday, Dec. 25;
  • New Year's on Tuesday, Dec. 31 and Wednesday, Jan. 1.

Motorists whose driver licenses or license plates expire over a holiday weekend should renew early.  Branch office wait times are shortest Tuesdays and Thursdays usually midmorning, midafternoon and midmonth.  Branch offices are open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  On Wednesdays the majority of offices are open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with those in city centers open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Many branch offices in smaller communities may close for a lunch hour.

Motorists renewing license plates can avoid a trip to the branch office by renewing by mail, by fax and, if eligible, by touch-tone telephone or Internet.  Easy to follow instructions can be found with the renewal notice.  License plate tabs will arrive by mail within seven business days.
