A PIN (Personal Identification Number) is assigned to a specific vehicle when the Secretary of State receives electronic verification of your insurance. The PIN allows you to renew by Phone or Internet.
The PIN is specific to each registration and can only be used for current renewal year. Do not use a PIN from a previous year because it will be expired and may have been reassigned to someone else's plate.
A PIN is valid only until the expiration date of the license plate. If your license plate has expired, you must renew by mail or at a branch office. In addition to the registration fee, a $10.00 late fee may be required if your license plate has expired.
Common reasons for not receiving a PIN include:
-
The VIN is not accurate on your insurance policy.
-
The insurance policy is too new.
-
The insurance company does not participate in the electronic insurance verification program.
-
The vehicle type is not eligible to renew by Phone or Internet at this time.
If you did not receive a PIN on your renewal notice, one cannot be assigned later. You will need to renew by mail or at a branch office so that you can provide a valid certificate of no-fault insurance.
