Inspector Licensing Information

Required State License(s):

Boiler Inspectors, Installers, Repairers -- Shall be licensed with the Department of Labor & Economic Growth, Bureau of Construction Codes, Boiler Division; (517) 241-9334.

Building Inspector -- Building inspectors employed by a county, city or other unit of government for the express purpose of enforcing the state building code must be registered with the Department of Labor & Economic Growth, Bureau of Construction Codes, Office of Local Government and Consumer Services; (517) 241-9347.

Electrical Inspector -- Electrical inspectors employed by a county, city or other unit of government for the express purpose of enforcing the state electrical code shall be registered with the Department of Labor & Economic Growth, Bureau of Construction Codes, Office of Local Government and Consumer Services; (517) 241-9347.

Elevator Inspector -- Should be certified competent with the Elevator Safety Board. Contact the Department of Labor & Economic Growth, Bureau of Construction Codes, Elevator Safety Division at (517) 241-9337.

There are two types of elevator inspectors: general elevator inspectors who are employed with the State of Michigan, and special elevator inspectors who are employed with an insurance company or municipalities.

Special elevator inspectors should also be commissioned with the Department of Labor & Economic Growth, Bureau of Construction Codes, Elevator Safety Division.

Mechanical Inspector -- An individual who inspects heating and cooling units in commercial and residential property requires licensing with the Department of Labor & Economic Growth, Bureau of Construction Codes, Mechanical Division; (517) 241-9325.

Milk Inspector, Certified Industry  Field-person -- Persons conducting certified farm inspections for milk distributors or milk plant operators should be certified with the Animal Industry Division, Department of Agriculture; (517) 373-1077.

Plumbing Inspector -- Plumbing inspectors employed by a county, city or other unit of government for the express purpose of enforcing the state plumbing code shall be registered with the Department of Labor & Economic Growth, Bureau of Construction Codes, Office of Local Government and Consumer Services; (517) 241-9347.

Real Estate Appraiser -- Real estate appraisers are required to be licensed with the Department of Labor & Economic Growth, Real Estate Appraiser Board, (517) 241-9288.

Real Estate Broker -- Real estate brokers, associate brokers, salespersons, appraisers, rental and leasing agents, are required to be licensed with the Department of Labor & Economic Growth, Board of Real Estate Brokers & Salespersons; (517) 241-9288.

Surveyor -- Individuals who use the title "licensed land surveyor" or practice land surveying work should be licensed with the Department of Labor & Economic Growth, Board of Professional Surveyors; (517) 241-9288.
