Carnival-amusement rides operating in Michigan must obtain an annual permit. Contact the Department of Labor and Economic Growth, Bureau of Commercial Services at (517) 241-9288 for information or visit our website at www.michigan.gov/amusement.
All rides require an annual safety inspection by the Department. Field staff of the Enforcement Division perform the ride inspections and also review the engineering analysis for rides new to Michigan: (517) 241-9273.
Carnival-Amusement operators are also required to obtain Special Inspector Commission for employees who perform daily on-site inspections of the rides.

If water is involved (water slides, pools, etc), contact the Department of Environmental Quality; (517) 335-9214.
If food products are prepared on the premises, a Food Service License is required with the Department of Agriculture, Food Division; (517) 373-1060.
A sales tax license may be required if products are sold to the public. You may call the Michigan Department of Treasury at (517) 636-4660 and request a 518 form.
Note: If a carnival game is illegal, a complaint should be filed with the police. State and local police and prosecutors are responsible for checking these types of games.
