Adult Foster Care License

The Department of Human Services Bureau of Children and Adult Licensing issues Adult Foster Care (AFC) Family Home, and Group Home Licenses, and Adult Camp Licenses to individuals, corporations, Limited Liability Companies, and certain government entities for the provision of supervised care or placemant.

New!  Applications for these tasks are submitted and paid for online through the Michigan Business One Stop portal.

 4.  Procedures and Time-Frame for Obtaining Permit or Approval

Adult Foster Care there is a 6 months statutory requirement.

Application Processing Time: Due to a high volume of pending Adult Foster Care (AFC) applications and the Division's limited resources, an AFC applicant can expect a waiting period of approximately 6 to 12 months before an original AFC license may be issued. Waiting periods may vary depending on complaint activity, workloads of local health authorities and the Bureau of Fire Services, and the timeliness of applicant compliance.

The fee schedule for originals and renewals per type of licensing fee is as follows:

  • Adult Foster Care - AF, Original: $65, Renewal: $25
  • Adult Foster Care - AS, Original: $105, Renewal: $25
  • Adult Foster Care - AM, Original: $135, Renewal: $60
  • Adult Foster Care - AL, Original: $170, Renewal: $100
  • Adult Foster Care - Congregate, Original: $220, Renewal: $150
  • Homes for the Aged, Original: $3.135 per bed, Renewal: $6.27 per bed
