Transport Service

Non-Emergency Transporting Vehicle -- Non-emergency vehicles (such as automobiles, vans and other cutaway style vehicles taking patients to doctor appointments, etc. in exchange for compensation) must obtain a business license from the Michigan Department of Transportation; but are NOT REQUIRED if only transporting EMERGENCY care patients.

If the manufacturer specifies that the vehicle can carry 15 people or less, a license is required with the Department of Transportation, Multi-Modal Transportations Services; (517) 241-0679 or (517) 241-0680. If the manufacturer specifies that the vehicle can carry 16 people or more, a license is required with the Department of Transportation, Multi-Modal Transportations Services; (517) 335-2583. If the vehicle is used to carry packages (other than those belonging to passengers), contact the Public Service Commission, Motor Carrier Division; (517) 241-6029.

Limousine Service -- The Limousine Transportation Act requires that all motor vehicles (regardless of body style) having a seating capacity of 15 passengers or less, including the driver, transporting passengers in exchange for compensation, are required to be licensed with the Michigan Department of Transportation, Multi-Modal Transportation Services Bureau at (517) 241-0679 or (517) 241-0680. If businesses purchase vehicles tax exempt, a use tax should be charged for rentals. You may call the Michigan Department of Treasury at (517) 636-4730. 

Chauffeur's license and commercial plates should be obtained with the local Secretary of State's Office. If the vehicle will carry less than 16 passengers, contact the city clerk's office to determine if a local license is required.

Ambulance Service -- EMERGENCY care ambulances are required to be registered with the Department of Consumer and Industry Services. This includes "air ambulances" (helicopters, planes) and watercraft transporting persons for emergency care. Ambulance attendants are also required to be licensed with the Department of Consumer & Industry Services; (517) 241-3020.
