When assisting in the clinical practice of dentistry based on formal education, specialized knowledge and skill in areas of expanded functions, a license is required as a Registered Dental Assistant with the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Bureau of Health Health Care Services, Board of Dentistry; 517-335-0918.

A dental assistant is an unlicensed person who assists the dentist in the chair-side capacity. The activities in which the dental assistant can participate are listed in the Administrative Rules for the Board of Dentistry.
