Installment Sales

Required State License(s):

If an auto dealer finances automobile purchases, the dealer should be licensed as an Installment Seller of Motor Vehicles under the Motor Vehicle Sales Finance Act. Contact the Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation, telephone 1- 877-999-6442 or visit the website at: www.michigan.gov/ofir.

For installment sales of other products, no license is required, but certain limits apply about the rate of interest that may be charged. New and Used Vehicle Dealers are licensed with the Department of State, Dealer Division; (517) 373-9460.

Personalized sales tax returns and a payment schedule will be mailed within four to six weeks after the registration has been processed.
