    Oversize & Overweight Trucks

    The Michigan Department of Transportation issues permits for all trucks and trailers hauling oversized/overweight loads.

    New!  Applications for these tasks are submitted and paid for online through the Michigan Business One Stop portal.


    A. NAME OF PERMIT OR APPROVAL:   

    Oversize/Overweight Transport Permits -

    An oversize/overweight transport permit is issued for the movement of oversize/overweight loads that cannot be readily dismantled or otherwise arranged to become legal dimensions and/or legal weight in order to travel legally on State highways. Legal dimensions and weights may be found on Form T-1.

    B. STATUTORY AUTHORITY:   

    Public Act 300 of 1949, as amended entitled the Motor Vehicle Code

    C. APPLICABLE REGULATION:   

    None.   

    D. SUMMARY OF PERMIT/APPROVAL PROCESS:   

     1.  Applicability (activities that require the permit)  

    Michiganrequires that all trucks and trailers hauling oversized/overweight loads be permitted. Movement of an oversized/overweight load that cannot be readily dismantled or otherwise arranged to become legal dimensions and/or legal weight shall obtain a single trip or extended trip permit in order to travel legally on State highways.

    Examples of items that may be permitted are dozers, front-end loaders, cranes, trusses, beams, steel plates, mobile/modular homes, concrete pipes, utility poles, agricultural implements, and boats.

    Examples of specialty permits that shall only be permitted on an extended/annual permit are snow removal equipment, wreckers, pavement marking, rubbish, raw forest products, logging trailers and milk trucks.

    Examples of specialty permits that shall only be permitted on a single trip permit are superloads and house moves.

     2.  Pre-Application Requirements  

    Permit applicants shall ensure they are familiar with the loads they are moving and the route in which they are traveling.

     3.  Application Submission Requirements  
    • Applicants may work with a permit service or visit a Transportation Service to complete, sign and submit an application for a single trip permit.
    • Applicants shall mail extended/annual applications to the Lansing Transport Permit Unit via US Postal Service.
    • Applicants shall contact a permit service for a Superload single trip permit unless they have a MIPARS Account and shall submit an application, certified route survey and shippers letter.
    • House movers shall mail applications directly to the Lansing Transport Permit Unit.
     4.  Procedures and Time-Frame for Obtaining Permit or Approval  

    A complete and correct single trip permit application is normally processed and a permit issued within 12 business hours.

    A complete and correct Superload single-trip permit application, certified route survey and shipper's letter is normally processed and a permit issued within 10 business days.

    A complete and correct extended/annual trip permit application is processed and a permit issued in the order received.

     5.  Operational Requirements  

    Applicants shall adhere to the permit dimensions, special conditions and restrictions.  

     6.  Fees

    Oversize single trip permit: $ 15.00 Oversize/Overweight or Overweight only: $50.00 Superload or House Move permit: $50.00

    Extended/annual permit: contact the Lansing Transport Permit Office.

    All fees are non-refundable according to Public Act 561 of 2002 entitled Appropriations Bill, Section 301.

     7.  Appeal Process  

    If a permit is denied, the permit applicant may request an Administrative Hearing in writing in accordance with Public Act 306 of 1969, as amended entitled Administrative Procedures Act.
