Radiation Shielding Plan Review
B. STATUTORY AUTHORITY: Part 135 - Radiation Control of
the Public Health Code, Public Act 368 of 1978, as amended.

D. SUMMARY OF LICENSE/APPROVAL PROCESS: 1.
Applicability (activities that require the license)
The degree of protection required for an enclosure of a radiation machine is
subject to design approval by the Department. Types of radiation machine uses for which shielding design plans should be
submitted to the Radiation Safety Section for review and approval include: Medical/podiatric/chiropractic/veterinary use of x-ray equipment
Dental use of x-ray equipment
Industrial/educational/governmental use of x-ray equipment

Pre-Application Requirements
Approval for radiation shielding design should be obtained prior to
construction. 3.
Application Submission Requirements
An Application
for a Radiation Shielding Plan Review must be on the form furnished by
the Department and contain all information requested on that form. Plans or
blueprints of the room and adjacent areas using a scale of 1/4 inch per foot or
greater must accompany the application. Details of other information to include
on the plans are listed on the application. 4.
Procedures and Time-Frame for Obtaining Permit or Approval
An Application
for a Radiation Shielding Plan Review can be obtained on our website or
by calling the Radiation Safety Section at (517) 241-1989 to request an
application. Once a complete application and plans are received, a review is
completed within 6 weeks. 5.
Operational Requirements
Radiation shielding plans should be approved prior to the radiation machine
being registered. Certificate of Need covered services must have an approved
shielding plan before registration for the machine is issued. Covered services
include CT scanners, x-ray machines used in heart catheterization procedures or
in lithotripsy procedures, and therapy accelerators. 6.
Fees
None. 7.
Appeal Process
In a contested case, the Department shall conduct a hearing as provided in
the Administrative
Procedures Act of 1969. 8.
