| Think you already know how unhealthy smoking is? Think
again: |
| Health Hazards |
- Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death and disease
among all adult populations.
- It results in over 400,000 deaths in the U.S. and nearly 15,000 deaths
among Michigan residents each year.
- Someone who smokes a pack or more of cigarettes per day lives an
average of 7 years less than someone who never smoked.
- Communities of color suffer a greater burden of tobacco-related
death and disease.
- You can also be affected by smoking if you are a nonsmoker, as exposure
to secondhand smoke can cause lung and heart disease.
There are more overall effects of smoking you should also know about.
There is good news, though. The benefits of quitting begin as soon as
20 minutes after your last cigarette.
