Filing of tax returns electronically is Secure, Fast, and Convenient. Treasury is committed to processing SBT e-file returns in less than half the time of paper returns, and account resolution for SBT e-file returns receive priority.

Treasury and its customers, continue to benefit from advances in technology that improve efficiencies and enhance the State's tax filing, refund, and audit processes. E-file is a key component in this improvement and enhancement.

Software developers have been advised that all SBT returns prepared with software must be e-filed. Therefore, if you prepare SBT returns using a computer software program you must e-file all eligible returns that are supported by your software.

Michigan participates in the SBT Fed/State e-file program and will also continue to offer the SBT Direct e-file program. View a list of companies that offer e-file software for Michigan and federal single business tax and income tax returns.

 Choosing a Tax Preparation Software

You will need to purchase tax preparation software that supports e-file. When choosing software, you should consider the following:

  • Software must be accepted by the IRS and/or the State of Michigan.
  • Software should support e-filing of Fed/State and/or Michigan SBT return.
  • How returns are transmitted.
  • Volume discounts and/or charges for rejections or retransmissions.
  • Number of software updates issued.
  • Communication of updates (Web site, modem, express mail, regular mail).
  • Technical support.

The IRS and Treasury do not charge for e-filing. There may be fees associated with the commercial software used to prepare and transmit the returns. These packages differ in price and features.
