Choosing A Software Company

Information about specific software offers will be published as it becomes available for tax year 2009. Please check back for updates.

As a convenience to taxpayers, Treasury is providing links to software company Web sites. Some companies have free offers - do you qualify? Visit their Web sites for more information on how to e-file using their products.

E-file returns are processed faster than paper returns. Please allow 14 days before checking the status of your e-filed return using the Michigan Department of Treasury's "Check My Income Tax Info" Web site.

Other Online Filing Offers
If you do not qualify for one of the free file offers, there are other offers available for a fee. Some of the software companies may offer free preparation and filing of the Michigan return if you pay a fee to file the federal return.

State-Only e-file Offers

State-Only e-file lets you submit your Michigan individual income tax return separately from your federal return. You can even e-file your homestead property tax credit and/or home heating credit claims separately. If you e-file your Michigan tax return alone, be sure to calculate your federal return first before completing and e-filing your Michigan return.

You may want to choose State-Only e-file if you:

  • Already filed your federal return (e-filed or paper filed).
  • Are not required to file a federal return.
  • Only need to file a Michigan property tax credit and/or home heating credit claim.

If you already filed your federal return, and now want to e-file your Michigan return, do not e-file another copy of the federal return. Doing so will result in a rejection from the IRS and Michigan will not receive your State return information.
