Can I sign my Michigan e-file return electronically?

Yes.  If you are e-filing your Michigan (and/or City of Detroit) return separately from your federal return (State and/or City of Detroit Standalone e-file) you may choose to sign it electronically if you filed an MI-1040, MI-1040CR, MI-1040CR-2 or MI-1040CR-7 for the previous tax year and your software supports the Electronic Signature Alternative (ESA). The ESA is composed of the following “shared secrets” from your previous year's return:

  • Social Security Number(s)
  • Adjusted gross income (AGI) or total household resources from from the previous year’s return; and
  • Tax due or refund amount from the previous year's return.

The shared secrets can be from your return as originally filed, an amended return, or the return as corrected by Michigan Department of Treasury.

If you are e-filing your Michigan (and/or City of Detroit) return together with your federal return, the Michigan Department of Treasury accepts the federal signature.
