What should I do when I owe tax and want to e-file my income tax return?
When you e-file and owe tax, your payment is due by April 15. Any payment received after April 15 is subject to penalty and interest.
There are now multiple ways to pay tax due on e-filed returns:
- Direct Debit. New for tax year 2016, payment on a tax due return can be made using direct debit at the same time the tax return is e-filed, when supported by the software.
- Michigan Individual Income Tax e-Payments system. You may choose to make an electronic payment (eCheck) from a checking or savings account if the taxpayer has filed a Michigan Individual Income Tax return from the previous tax year. There is no fee to use this payment option. All Michigan Individual Income Tax filers may choose to make a payment using a credit or debit card. Credit card payments will be assessed a convenience fee of 2.35% of the total payment amount. Debit card payments will be charged a flat fee of $3.95.
Note: City of Detroit payments are not eligible for Treasury e-Payments and you must use Direct Debit or Form CITY-V (CITY Income Tax e-file Payment Voucher).
- Or, submit your payment(s), along with Form MI-1040-V (Individual Income Tax e-file Payment Voucher) and/or Form CITY-V. Your tax preparer or computer software will provide a copy of the form. Do not include a copy of your return with your payment(s).
