OCTOBER 16, 2008 - Michigan's Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) will be holding two free seminars in November for Detroit employers about the state's unemployment insurance tax and benefit programs.
UIA will hold the two 3½-hour seminars starting at 9:00 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19, at the state of Michigan's Cadillac Place office building, 3024 W. Grand Blvd., in Detroit.
"The seminar is intended to acquaint employers with the state's unemployment insurance system and with recent changes at the UIA," Agency Director Stephen Geskey said.
He said that interested employers can register for the seminar by visiting the agency's website (www.michigan.gov/uia) for a registration form, which they can fill out and then fax to 313.456.2910 or mail to UIA, Attn: Ann Marie Cardenas, 3024 W. Grand Blvd., Suite 13-600, Detroit, MI 48202. They can also email their request to CardenasAnnM@Michigan.gov. Those with questions about the seminar can call Cardenas at 313.456.2943.
Geskey advised interested employers to register quickly as he expects the seminars will fill up fast.
Topics for the seminar include UIA's new online services for employers, SUTA dumping and how to avoid it, employee misclassification, how unemployment benefits are paid and charged to an employer's tax account, and how to appeal an unemployment claim.
Seminars have already been held in Kalamazoo, Lansing and Traverse City, while two others are scheduled for Farmington and Baraga.
The meeting sites and parking are accessible. Individuals attending the seminars are asked to refrain from using heavily scented personal care products, in order to enhance accessibility for everyone. People with disabilities requiring additional services (such as materials in alternative format) in order to participate in the meeting should call 313.456.2943 or email CardenasAnnM@Michigan.gov at least three business days prior to the meeting.
