JANUARY 7, 2009 - Michigan's Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) is continuing to receive very heavy call volumes.
"January is historically the busiest time of the year for UIA, we ask for the public's patience and cooperation so that we can service everybody as quickly as possible to ensure that they receive their unemployment benefits," said Stephen Geskey, director of the Unemployment Insurance Agency. "Unlike other states, Michigan's system is continuing to function. Our goal is to address each and every citizen concern as soon as possible. We are in the process of putting several mechanisms in place to address the high call volume. We have added additional server capacity and have reassigned staff. Online ability to file new claims, continuing claims using the Michigan Automated Response Voice Interactive Network (MARVIN) system, and fully staffing our call centers and Problem Resolution Offices are the agency's priorities at this time. These calls and claimants are our priority.
If you are unable to get through at your regularly scheduled time, please call back anytime on Thursday or Friday."
"Our telephone-filed toll-free line - 1-866-500-0017 - continues to be in service. However, because of the heavy call volumes, our phone system is experiencing at this time, we encourage workers, if at all possible, to file their claims online at the agency's website - www.michigan.gov/uia." Geskey advised.
Unemployed workers can file online at UIA's website anytime from 7:00 a.m. Monday through 7:00 p.m. Saturday (Eastern Time).
To phone and certify eligibility for unemployment benefits, MARVIN is available during claimants' Monday through Wednesday call-in schedule based on the last 2 digits of their Social Security number. If they are unable to certify during their call-in schedule, MARVIN is available Thursday and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Those with unemployment claims must call MARVIN once every two weeks to certify about their continuing eligibility for jobless benefits.
