January 28, 2009 - To help unemployed workers reach Michigan's Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA), the agency has expanded the hours of operation for its telephone lines and local help offices.
"In response to Governor Granholm's call for action to help the unemployed, we have increased the hours of service for our telephone filed claims and inquiry phone number, for our MARVIN telephone number and at our local Problem Resolution Offices (PRO)," UIA Director Stephen Geskey reported.
Effective Monday, January 26, the agency has temporarily expanded hours for:
- Telephone filed claims and inquiry (1-866-500-0017) - new hours: 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday - Friday
- MARVIN (1-866-638-3993) - new hours: 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday - Friday
- MARVIN will also be open on most Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., but will be closed the Saturday after the first Friday of the month
- MARVIN online will follow the same hours as the MARVIN telephone-based system, including the new Saturday hours
- Problem Resolution Offices - new hours: 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday - Friday
Geskey reminded callers to its telephone filed claims and MARVIN numbers that the two systems use a call-in appointment schedule on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday that is based on the last two digits of the caller's Social Security number. Thursdays and Fridays are open call-in days for both systems. Saturday is an open call-in day for MARVIN. Those claiming unemployment benefits contact MARVIN once every two weeks to certify they meet the eligibility requirements for benefits. Benefits are issued to eligible workers following their calls to MARVIN.
UIA currently has seven PROs around the state including a temporary PRO in Detroit. These offices help those have questions or problems with their unemployment claims. The temporary expansion in service hours is in addition to several other measures the agency has taken to better serve the state's unemployed. These other steps include: hiring additional staff, establishing a new call center in Lansing, expanding mandatory overtime hours for UIA staff, adding computer servers to speed the processing of unemployment claims filed online, and adding extra telephone lines to the MARVIN phone system.
