Claims EDI Comes to Michigan

The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) Workers' Compensation Agency (WCA), is seeking increased operational efficiencies and participation with the business community to operate in an increasingly paperless environment. Already successfully receiving Proof of Coverage (POC) information by Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), LARA-WCA, has been developing its EDI Claims program for some time.

Initially, the EDI Claims program at LARA-WCA will streamline the submission of First Report of Injury (FROI) data from its many trading partners and eliminate the handling of paper FROI forms whenever possible. Nationwide, an ever-increasing percentage of the initial FROI submissions are received via EDI processing. This percentage is expected to grow substantially as additional insurance companies, self-insured employers and third-party administrators embrace the benefits of EDI. The development of the process to receive Subsequent Reports of Injury (SROI) is already underway.

The next step in the development and implementation of the EDI Claims process is the finalization of the various tables that define the data that moves through EDI. WCA will be using the IAIABC Claims Release 3.0 standards. The tables have been prepared by WCA staff then reviewed by both the IAIABC national implementation team and the WCA working group made up of representatives of carriers, third-party administrators and self-insured employers. The draft tables are now posted below for review and comment. Additionally, we have posted the existing WCA paper forms 100 and 107 with the various data fields for EDI labeled with their data number (DN).

Your observations, questions, suggestions and comments are both welcome and appreciated. Please send your comments to lara-wca-edi@michigan.gov  before August 1, 2011.

Once the comment period has ended and the responses are reviewed, we will post the final versions along with the implementation guide and trading partner agreement forms necessary to initiate EDI as described in the guide. We look forward to getting this process operational with the initial trading partners by the end of this year.
