Civil Litigation
Civil Litigation
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel continues to lead the legal team that has resolved dozens of civil lawsuits filed on behalf of tens of thousands of people after the City of Flint switched its water supply to the Flint River. Attorney General Nessel’s legal team reached a preliminary agreement with the plaintiffs in August 2020. The settlement followed months of negotiations between Attorney General Nessel’s legal team and plaintiffs' counsel as the parties worked toward a resolution to provide relief to the people of Flint.
The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan granted preliminary approval to this historic settlement in January 2021 and formal, final approval in November 2021.
The settlement is now in the process of being implemented. The claims period opened on January 12, 2022 and is scheduled to close on May 12, 2022. Individuals and businesses that registered for the settlement are encouraged to submit their claims online or through the mail as soon as possible and no later than the May 12, 2022 closing date. A claims helpline has been established at 800-493-1754 for those who require help completing their claims.
