January 27, 2018
LANSING – Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette today announced that he has an open and ongoing investigation into systemic issues with sexual misconduct at Michigan State University that began in 2017.
The investigation is being led by independent special prosecutor and retired Kent County Prosecutor William Forsyth, with assistance from the Michigan State Police. Assistant Attorney General Christina Grossi has been named project manager.
The Michigan State Police will provide investigative support and resources.
Chief Deputy Attorney General Laura Moody, Chief Legal Counsel Eric Restuccia, Criminal Division Chief Rick Cunningham and Chief Investigator David Dwyre are part of the leadership team for the investigation, with Assistant Attorneys General from multiple divisions are providing expertise.
BACKGROUND OF TEAM MEMBERS
William Forsyth is an accomplished prosecutor with 42 years of experience serving the people of Michigan in Arenac, Kent, and Lapeer Counties, serving as President and Director of Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan, as well as serving as the elected Kent County Prosecutor for 30 years. Forsyth served as a member and on the board of Crime Victim Services. He is a graduate of Albion College and Detroit Law School, and was admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1974.

At the Attorney General’s office, Grossi worked in Public Employment, Election & Tort for 3 years, being promoted in 2013 to Head of Litigation in the State Operations Division. In 2017, she was promoted to First Assistant of Litigation and eDiscovery Practice Group in the State Operations Division. She has managed some of the Department’s most complex and significant civil litigation and is known as a tough civil litigator with vast experience.
QUOTES FROM SCHUETTE, FORSYTH AND ETUE
“It is abundantly clear that a full and complete investigation of what happened at Michigan State University, from the president’s office on down, is required. This investigation is and will continue to be, independent, thorough, transparent and prompt,” said Schuette. “My department and this investigation will find out who knew what, and when.”
“In all my time as a prosecutor, I have always put victims and survivors of crime first. Truth and justice are the bedrock of any investigation, and that is the philosophy I will bring to this case,” said Forsyth. “Like everyone, I have questions, and I am going to answer those long overdue questions.”
"Michigan State Police welcomes this opportunity to help the Attorney General to fully investigate and determine if any other crimes have been committed," said Col. Etue.
