I am an independent contractor, is there any help for me?

Generally, work performed by independent contractors is not considered covered employment, and contractors are not eligible for unemployment benefits. See MCL 421.42(5). That said, businesses can misclassify people and treat workers who should legally be employees as independent contractors. The Unemployment Insurance Agency is recommending that if you believe you are misclassified and think you should be considered an employee that you attempt to file a claim.
