New Employee Training in the MDOC

New employee training ranges from a general orientation for contractual employees to 320 hours of classroom instruction and two months of on-the-job training (OJT) for new corrections officers. Except for new corrections officers, new employee training is held at the employee's worksite. New corrections officers receive training at an off-site training academy and at their assigned correctional facility.

The core new employee training is basic correctional training programs that are applicable to all new employees. Following this, employees receive additional training depending on the amount of offender contact that they will have and their specific job assignment.

New employee training is divided into three major categories:

  • Field Agent New Employee Training (Parole/Probation Agents and Field Service Assistants)
  • Corrections Officers New Employee Training (Corrections Officers)
  • Non‑Custody New Employee Training (All Other Categories of Employees).
