Project: The purpose of the project is to provide parent education and support to families with a young child whose development is impacted by parental substance use disorder. The specific consequences and primary problems to be addressed are the fetal effects of prenatal exposure to illicit drugs, and the interference with education. It is well documented that early intervening services are critical for children who have been prenatally exposed. Home-based interventions have demonstrated success with this population. MCISD currently provides parent education, developmental screening and evaluation, service coordination, and on-going support/community referrals for families with young children identified as being at-risk. Funding provided by this grant would support expanded programming for young children and their families who are impacted by parental substance use disorders. Using the Parents as Teachers model of home visiting, and the Nurturing Parenting curriculum, families will receive parent education that promotes parental resiliency, social connections, social/emotional competence, concrete support in times of need, and increased understanding of child development.
