Project: The purpose of this project is to enhance our Parents as Teachers (PAT) Home Visiting Program in Sanilac County. Sanilac is proud to be a PAT Affiliate, and as such, held to the most stringent tenants of this research based model. Parents as Teachers equips families with children up to the age of 5 with the information and tools necessary to provide a healthy and safe home using five protective factors to strengthen families: prenatal resilience, social connections, knowledge of parenting and child development, concrete supports in times of need, and children's social and emotional development. Our PAT Affiliate program delivers home visits directly into the homes of our most at-risk families. We provide at least one group connection per month, offer developmental screenings and connect families to available resources and supports. The number of visits per family is based on the family risk-factors with a minimum of one home visit per month. Families enrolled in PAT have fewer documented cases of abuse and neglect compared to state average based on the "Second Wave" study which examined 400 families enrolled in 37 diverse school districts. Our intention with this project is to significantly decrease the number of children, newborn to age 5, suffering from abuse and neglect.
