City of Kalamazoo BRA awarded MDEQ Grant for mixed-use redevelopment

LANSING, MICH.  A contaminated property in Kalamazoo will be redeveloped as two mixed-use buildings with help from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). The City of Kalamazoo Brownfield Redevelopment Authority was awarded a $265,000 Refined Petroleum Grant to revitalize and safely reuse a former filling station and auto body shop at 615 West Kalamazoo Avenue.

Soil and groundwater were contaminated by gasoline from a leaking underground storage tank. The brownfield grant will be used to remove contaminated soil and install a ventilation system to prevent exposure to harmful vapors. The MDEQ grant will also pay for demolition and asbestos abatement.

615 Holdings LLC and 10th Street Properties LLC will build two new mixed-use buildings with commercial office space and 10 new apartments on the site. The $3.6 million redevelopment will create 20 new jobs and increase the taxable value of the property by over $650,000.  

The MDEQ partners with communities to protect public health and the environment and revitalize contaminated property. MDEQ grants and loans pay for environmental investigation and cleanup on brownfields.  Brownfields are vacant or abandoned properties with known or suspected environmental contamination.

Partnerships between MDEQ and communities have created over $4.7 billion in private investment and 24,000 new jobs over the life of the Brownfield Redevelopment Program. Each grant and loan dollar invested by the MDEQ in 2018 to protect residents and the environment is expected to return an average of $42 to the state’s economy.
