DEQ Internship Program
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) operates a unique Internship experience three times each year. The team of interns represents a wide array of majors and disciplines, including undergraduates, recent graduates, graduate students, law students, and PhD candidates. The team of 20 to 25 interns, under the supervision of the Michigan Environmental Education Coordinator, works on a portfolio of projects crossing all environmental areas of DEQ, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and some projects with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), and the Department of Education (MDE).
The projects may involve research, policy writing, data analyses, mapping and GIS, engineering, marketing, communications, journalism, report writing, and much more. Interns may work on anywhere from six to 12 projects during their internships. Interns participate in a multi-disciplinary problem-solving approach to their projects. They begin to develop a network of professional connections, since their projects are mentored by a wide array of managers and executives representing many different agencies, divisions, and programs.
In addition to the experience of working in a variety of content areas, the team internship provides other specific intentional experiences:
- They will learn to run effective meetings;
- They will learn how to function and communicate effectively in a government office;
- They will work on some projects independently;
- They will work on other projects as a collaborator on a team;
- They will work on other projects as the Team’s Project Manager.
The internship also includes a series of speakers and presentations on a variety of topics, such as the current state of environmental education in Michigan and nationally; working with multiple generations in the workforce; how to manage their careers and build networks; how to prepare for employment, and more.
