Boyne City awarded MDEQ Grant

LANSING, MICH. A contaminated former gas station in Boyne City will be redeveloped as a commercial office space with help from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). Boyne City was awarded a $106,000 Brownfield Grant to revitalize and safely reuse the old gas station at 437 Boyne Avenue, Boyne City. Soil and groundwater were contaminated by leaking underground storage tanks removed from the property in the 1990s.

Boyne Avenue Properties, LLC will renovate an existing building into new commercial office space. The brownfield grant will be used to install a barrier and ventilation system in the renovated building to prevent exposure to harmful vapors. The renovation will create four jobs, revitalize a building at the main corridor into Boyne City, and help to improve economic development in downtown.

The MDEQ partners with communities to protect public health and the environment and revitalize contaminated property. MDEQ grants and loans pay for environmental investigation and cleanup on brownfields. Brownfields are vacant or abandoned properties with known or suspected environmental contamination.

Partnerships between MDEQ and communities have created over $4.7 billion in private investment and 24,000 new jobs over the life of the Brownfield Redevelopment Program. Each grant and loan dollar invested by the MDEQ in 2018 to protect residents and the environment is expected to return an average of $42 to the state’s economy.
