Michigan companies hired more than 2,700 veterans in 2016

2016 Gold-Level Veteran-Friendly Employers LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder joined Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency Director James Robert Redford today to recognize the state’s top companies dedicated to veteran employment during the 2016 Veteran-Friendly Employer Awards and Recognition Breakfast. Seventy-six organizations earned either bronze-, silver- or gold-level status as determined by their dedication to connect with and hire veteran talent.

“Commitment to our veterans is a commitment to Michigan’s future,” Snyder said. “Those who have served in the military return with a wealth of talent and valuable skills that are exactly what our state’s businesses need to succeed in tomorrow’s economy. I applaud those companies for recognizing that fact and helping our veterans build long-lasting careers.”

Through MVAA’s Veteran-Friendly Employer program, veterans can choose from job opportunities in a variety of industries and can more easily identify employers committed to hiring and supporting veteran talent in their workforces. The program also recognizes organizations for their dedication to recruiting, hiring, training and maintaining veteran talent. In 2016, Veteran-Friendly Employers hired more than 2,700 veterans.

“The goal of the Veteran-Friendly Employer program is to connect veterans with employers who understand the value of their military training and discipline,” Redford said. “Veterans bring critical-thinking skills and a focus on teamwork to the companies that hire them. Their leadership skills are battle tested and they are used to shifting gears at a moment’s notice.”

Six organizations were certified as gold-level Veteran-Friendly Employers: DTE Energy, General Motors, Michigan Department of Transportation, Quicken Loans, Roush Enterprises and Whirlpool Corporation.

To be recognized as gold, employers must retain at least 75 percent of veteran hires over the past 12 months, implement internal veteran support networks and create either a hiring rotation or leadership development program within their organization, in addition to meeting all other requirements under the Veteran-Friendly Employer program.

MDOT also received the Rising Star Award, which is presented to a gold- or silver-level employer that exhibits new and novel approaches to veteran recruitment and hiring. MDOT was chosen for its unique apprenticeship program that offers positions where military skills translate well including aeronautics, engineering, finance, maintenance, planning, project management and office assistance.

MDOT has also partnered with other state agencies and companies to participate in the “Why Michigan Talent Attraction Team,” which recruits transitioning service members from across the country to work and live in Michigan.

Eight organizations were honored as 2016 silver-level employers for meeting or exceeding their veteran hiring goals and implementing internship and on-the-job training programs for veterans, including Consumers Energy, Cooper Standard, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Kellogg’s, Michigan State Police, Prestige Group, Uniform Color Company and Verizon.
