LANSING, Mich.—The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency will host a Veterans Community Action Team summit in Gaylord on June 28 to network, share best practice, and collaborate on how best to serve the state’s more than 640,000 veterans.
VCATs are comprised of federal, state, local and faith-based organizations that support veterans in the communities where they live and work. The summit is intended for northern Michigan organizations and will feature VCAT regional coordinators from Economic Prosperity Regions 1, 2 and 3. The event is the first of three to be held this summer.
The summit will feature breakout sessions on strategic planning and funding options, a discussion on best practices on local programs in the areas of employment, education, health care and quality of life and on the federal VA Choice Program.
The VCAT program was created to provide veterans easier access to comprehensive health, employment, education, and quality-of-life opportunities. VCAT regional coordinators are assigned to each of the state’s 10 Economic Prosperity Regions, focusing on identifying solutions for gaps in veteran services, reducing duplication of efforts and simplifying connections with local resources.
The program has been serving veterans since 2013, in partnership with the Michigan Association of Counties. Nearly 1,200 organizations belong to the 10 VCATs.
