Mears State Park's Entrance Sign in the Fall

Fall Volunteer Day is a chance for people to come to the park and perform tasks alongside staff to prepare the park for the off-season. Volunteers remove benches and tables from areas of the park, help put up snow fence and paint park buildings as just a couple examples of activities. Free camping is offered to volunteers who help out on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Volunteers have the option of coming back Sunday to finish up any tasks or get more items crossed of the list, but the requirement for free camping is only on Saturday. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult in order to volunteer. This event is open to everyone, there is no requirement to camp.  People may volunteer for any amount of time that they would like but to get free camping a minimum amount of volunteer time is necessary (9a.m. - 4:00 p.m). Camping reservations are not needed for this weekend. Campers who make a reservation but then decide to volunteer can receive a refund after they complete the volunteer requirement. For more information, please call the park.

A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry into Michigan state parks. To make a camping reservation, visit or call 1-800-447-2757.

Please Note: Dates occasionally change and events may be canceled due to inclement weather and other reasons. Please call the park to confirm dates/times prior to your arrival.
