Mission: Improving rustic camping info

  • Project Rustic - a statewide RV tour of Michigan's rustic campgrounds - was designed to help improve the depth and accuracy of information for rustic and backcountry travelers. The tour was the innovation of Paige, a Huron Pines AmeriCorps member serving with the DNR, who felt one of the best ways to capture the details of each destination was to experience it herself by traveling in a mobile office.

Paige lived in and worked from an RV provided by General RV and traveled through Michigan to rustic state forest campgrounds for five months during spring/summer 2021. Her mission was to collect GPS (location) data for mapping, update the DNR photo library and more.

The information she gathered helps us provide a better rustic camping experience for you, both in planning and enjoying your visit.

Paige is a Michigan native who is passionate about enjoying many of the outdoor recreation opportunities available in our state, including hiking, biking, skiing, paddleboarding and, of course, camping. Her background and education are focused on environmental studies and sustainability, and sustainable natural resource recreation and tourism.

This was Paige's second term with Huron Pines AmeriCorps serving with the DNR.
