Harsens Island Managed Waterfowl Hunt Area Manager's Update

Review for week ending

  • 12/01/2019

Weather

  • Outside of a crazy windy, rainy day on Wednesday, the weather was very mild and warm for the end of November.

Waterfowl abundance

  • A few more mallards trickled back into the refuge by the end of the week, bringing our count up to 7-8,000 super educated ducks.

Hunting conditions

  • We had no significant ice problems this week, just skim ice a couple of mornings.

Hunter numbers

  • We had 768 hunter trips this week, again more in the afternoon than morning hunts. Our lowest participation day was Monday am with 6 parties. Our highest participation for the week (and season) was Wednesday afternoon with 81 parties.

Waterfowl harvest

  • Outside of 208 ducks harvested during the serious winds on Wednesday, the hunting was very slow. 302 ducks were taken total in the other 6 days of the week, for a total of 510 ducks and 11 geese for the week. This is an average of 0.66 ducks/trip for the 7th week of the season. Our season totals through 12/1 are 8,340 ducks and 127 geese in 6,377 hunter trips, for an average of 1.31 ducks/trip.

What to expect this week

  • It looks like we’ll make it through Sunday without any significant ice issues. The downside of that is we have very little cold weather or significant wind and precipitation to get the birds moving. We have started drawing down some refuge areas and will start drawing down hunting units on Saturday afternoon.
