Shiawassee River Managed Waterfowl Hunt Area Manager's Update

Review For Week Ending

  • 12/1/2019

  • Temperatures for most of the week were right around freezing, we had a couple of nights of mid twenty’s and a couple of days in the mid-forties. Rain or snow most of the week. We had a couple of snow events but it didn’t seem to move birds around much here.

Waterfowl abundance

  • No refuge counts were done this week because all of the refuge units were frozen. There were a few small pockets of open water but less than 20 birds using the refuge units.

Hunting conditions

  •  All the ag fields are back open now and free of ice. We are however just coming off another flood event where hunters could not access the parking lots with their vehicles.

Hunter numbers

  • The number of parties participating in the draw ranged from a low of zero and a high of six.

Waterfowl Numbers

  • Thus far hunters have harvested 5360 ducks, 734 geese during 4265 hunter trips. The average is at 1.25 ducks per hunter and 1.42 birds per hunter trip.

What to expect this week

  • Through mid-week temps are expected to be in the 20s during the evening hours so we expect the area to ice up some. Towards the weekend temps are expected to be back above freezing which should thaw anything that froze up earlier in the week. Please call ahead.

Upcoming events

  • Season ends on December 8th. Don’t forget the split on December 28th and 29th.

Other comments

  • We have been busy with deer with approximately 1000 deer checked so far.
