Fish Point Managed Waterfowl Hunt Area Manager's Update

Review For Week Ending

  • 12/06/2020

Weather

  • Nighttime temperatures varied throughout the week between 28 to 37, with highs reaching the low 40’s.  Hunting conditions this week were windy and cold, we had several days with a 15-20mph winds and at the beginning of the week we had rain/snow mix.

Waterfowl abundance

  • Waterfowl numbers were down from last week’s count.  Good numbers of Mallards, Black Ducks, Canada Geese and Tundra Swans are still present on the area.

Hunting conditions

  • All corn hunting zones are currently being dewatered.  Ice has formed over much of the area except for the deep-water pockets that are exposed to the wind.  Zone 4 is also being dewater for spring phragmites research.  March blinds 5-8 have 12-24 inches of water.
  • Marsh Zone 39-44 has good cattail cover.  Water level are 24-30 inches.
  • The corn in the 70’s is 7-8ft tall and should produce good cover and food for migrating waterfowl this fall.  There is one (1) 30ft strip and two (2) 60ft strips of corn that extend the length of the field. These strips will provide hunters with plenty cover to hide and ample food for waterfowl throughout the season.   These zones are dry land hunting areas.
  • Blind locations: 4-9, 22, 23, 26-27, 29, 32, 49 and 66

Hunter numbers

  • Thru December 6th we have seen 4266 hunters, up from 2019 by 18 hunter trips, but down from the 5-year average of 5240.  Hunters turned out in good number this year despite not having leftovers permits or having a second drawing each day.  The highest draw this week was 59.

Waterfowl harvest

  • Hunters harvested 5498 ducks and geese 198 (1.29 ducks/hunter trip) thru 12/6/2020.  Harvest was up by 13% over last year, and up from the 5-year average by 3.3%.
  • This only includes harvest from the regular duck season.

What to expect this week

  • Deer/pheasant hunters can expect more dry ground to hunt on as the week goes on.

Upcoming events

  • Deer/pheasant hunting drawing will be held at 12pm on December 13th (Hunting Period Dec. 14th thru Dec. 25th and Dec. 28th thru Jan 1st.)

  • We will be open for waterfowl hunting via self-registration for the two-day split on December 26-27th.
