Trail updates for the Keweenaw Peninsula
Severe damage occurred over Houghton County trails in June/July 2018 when major storms struck Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The damage forced numerous trail closures. The DNR and partnering agencies have worked to reopen several trail segments, although a few ORV trails are still impacted. Users are encouraged to visit the Interactive ORV Route & Trail Maps for details of affected trails. Overall, ORV trail connectivity remains open between Houghton and Copper Harbor.
2019 ORV trail closure updates include:
- Access to Houghton and across Portage Lift Bridge to the Keweenaw Peninsula is open.
- The Freda route is closed.
- The Lake Linden route provides access to Dollar Bay and Lake Linden. The route is closed between these communities.
- The Hancock to Calumet trail is open.
2018/19 snowmobile trail updates include:
Snowmobile Trail No. 133 is closed for the year due to logging activities.
Snowmobile Trail No. 3 between Twin Lakes and Houghton is open. Access to the Keweenaw Peninsula is established via trails No. 3 and No. 17.
Several trails will be closed for the 2018-2019 snowmobile season, including trails No. 120, No. 121 and No. 3 between Dollar Bay and Lake Linden.
The Houghton to Chassell rail-trail also is closed. This is not a designated snowmobile trail, but in past years has been open to snowmobiling.
