Conservation Officer Nick Ingersoll received the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Lifesaving Award at the June 13 Natural Resources Commission Meeting. Ingersoll is credited for saving the life of a 24-year-old capsized kayaker on Lake Erie in March. After towing the DNR patrol boat to the Sterling State Park boat launch, Ingersoll was assisted by two fishermen in launching the boat, and then set about searching for the man and locating him about a quarter-mile offshore and struggling in choppy waters. The exhausted man was suffering from hypothermia and needed Ingersoll’s help to get into the patrol boat. Ingersoll’s quick actions and calm demeanor were key to helping the man reach safety and ultimately make a full recovery.
