We're looking for nature educators to lead fourth-grade school field trips through resource-based educational hikes and activities in state parks and recreation areas. As part of the new Nature Awaits program, these environmental education programs will meet fourth-grade curriculum standards, including science, social studies, physical fitness and language arts through experiential learning outdoors.
Nature Awaits offers a new opportunity for children to experience Michigan's outdoors. All fourth grade classrooms are eligible for a FREE experiential field trip to select state parks to support their classroom learning!
Position overview
Job duties: Employee is responsible for facilitating school field trips for classrooms in the Nature Awaits program. Employee will assist with preparations for program reservations, guide students through student-led activities, answer questions, facilitate learning and introduce students to each park’s unique natural and cultural features. Employee is responsible for helping to communicate with the public and each park supervisor about Nature Awaits programs.
Education/experience: Applicants must have a high school diploma. College coursework in natural sciences, education, or parks and recreation is strongly recommended. Applicants should also be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of Michigan’s natural resources, have an ability to communicate with school audiences with varied backgrounds in outdoor experience, and have a positive work attitude demonstrating emotional maturity. Applicants should be able to work independently as well as with small and large teams.
Schedule: Part-time, varies seasonally. Up to 29 hours per week in spring and fall, with flexible opportunities for summer work. Spring and fall hours to likely be Monday through Friday. Variations to the recommended work schedule may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Work stations: Official work stations for these positions are located at Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery, Waterloo Recreation Area's Eddy Discovery Center, Bald Mountain Recreation Area, the Outdoor Adventure Center, Bay City State Park, Hoffmaster State Park's Gillette Visitor Center, Oden State Fish Hatchery, Carl T. Hunt & Fish Center, Hartwick Pines State Park's Visitor Center, Tahquamenon Falls State Parks Visitor Center and Porcupine Wilderness State Park's Visitor Center.
