Michigan National Guard training exercises slated for Marquette County
September 06, 2022
Soldiers from the Michigan National Guard 1431 Engineer Company in Calumet will be conducting training exercises beginning Friday at Horseshoe Lake, south of Republic in Marquette County.
The training will occur from Sept. 9-12 in and around a former Michigan Department of Natural Resources campground at Horseshoe Lake, which is situated west of M-95 and the community of Witch Lake.
“We urge visitors to this area to use caution during the National Guard exercises,” said John Pepin, DNR deputy public information officer. “There will be heavy equipment in the area as the guard conducts its activities.”
The guard will be using the Horseshoe Lake boating access site, but it will remain open for public recreation, including boating and fishing. The military use of the area will not conflict with civilian traffic on Horseshoe Lake Road
The DNR Forest Resources Division granted a permit to the National Guard for this training.
