State of Michigan Chief Performance Officer Receives National Award
February 28, 2018
Jeff Bankowski, Chief Performance Officer and Executive Director of the Office of Performance and Transformation (OPT), was named the recipient of the 2018 William R. Snodgrass Distinguished Leadership Award from the Association of Government Accountants’ Board of Directors and the National Awards Committee.
The award was presented on February 27 to Bankowski at the 2018 National Leadership Training (NLT) Awards Luncheon in Washington, D.C. He is only the second recipient from Michigan to receive the William R. Snodgrass Distinguished Leadership Award in its 21-year history.
This national award recognizes a state government professional who exemplifies and promotes excellence in government financial management and who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in enhancing sound financial management legislation, regulations, practices, policies and systems.
When the OPT was formed in 2016 per Gov. Rick Snyder’s Executive Order 2016-4, Bankowski was appointed to lead the office. He oversees the lean process initiatives and helps state departments establish a more effective system of leadership, employee engagement, customer service, performance management, and regulatory and business practices. Since Bankowski’s appointment, participation in the Employee Survey has hit an all-time high of 76 percent; almost 3,000 current and emerging leaders completed leadership and manager development training; approximately 1,000 people were trained in Lean; and 24 executive orders were rescinded -- eliminating confusion in state government and unnecessary regulatory burdens.
“I couldn’t think of a more deserving recipient of this award. In less than two years, under Jeff’s leadership, the OPT is now known as a trusted advisor across state departments,” said State Budget Office Director John Walsh. “Jeff actively works to foster an innovative and efficient government where continuous improvement is achieved for all people in Michigan.”
