June Unemployment Rates Up Slightly in Majority of Michigan Regional Labor Markets
Lansing – Seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates in June edged up seasonally in 14 of the state’s 17 major labor market areas, according to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget. Total employment and workforce levels increased over the month in most regions.
“June 2018 was very typical for Michigan’s job market. Workforce levels swelled throughout the state as many individuals entered the labor market seeking seasonal employment,” said Jason Palmer, director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information & Strategic Initiatives. “Most of Michigan’s local labor markets in mid-2018 continued to show slight improvement over last year.”
During June, the unemployment rate increases in the 14 regions were moderate and ranged from 0.3 to 0.7 of a percentage point with a median advance of 0.4 of a percentage point. The largest over-the-month jobless rate hikes occurred in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn (+0.7), Muskegon (+0.6) and Lansing-East Lansing (+0.6) Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). The unemployment rate in the Northwest Lower Michigan region declined in June by 0.1 of a percentage point while the rates in the Northeast Lower Michigan region and the Upper Peninsula were unchanged.
