Lansing – Seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates in June edged up seasonally in 14 of the state’s 17 major labor market areas, according to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget. Total employment and workforce levels increased over the month in most regions.
“June 2018 was very typical for Michigan’s job market. Workforce levels swelled throughout the state as many individuals entered the labor market seeking seasonal employment,” said Jason Palmer, director of the Bureau of Labor Market Information & Strategic Initiatives. “Most of Michigan’s local labor markets in mid-2018 continued to show slight improvement over last year.”
During June, the unemployment rate increases in the 14 regions were moderate and ranged from 0.3 to 0.7 of a percentage point with a median advance of 0.4 of a percentage point. The largest over-the-month jobless rate hikes occurred in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn (+0.7), Muskegon (+0.6) and Lansing-East Lansing (+0.6) Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). The unemployment rate in the Northwest Lower Michigan region declined in June by 0.1 of a percentage point while the rates in the Northeast Lower Michigan region and the Upper Peninsula were unchanged. In June, regional unemployment rates in Michigan ranged from 3.3 to 5.9 percent. The June Michigan non-seasonally adjusted jobless rate was 4.3 percent, while the national unadjusted rate was 4.2 percent.
Unemployment Rates Down Over Year
Since June 2017, jobless rates declined in 16 of the 17 Michigan regions. Rate reductions over the year ranged from 0.1 to 1.0 percentage point with a moderate median decline of 0.4 of a percentage point. The most pronounced rate decreases were posted in the Lansing-East Lansing (-1.0) and Battle Creek (-0.6) MSAs. The unemployment rate in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn MSA rose slightly by 0.3 of a percentage point since June 2017.
Total Employment Up Over Month, Year
From May to June, total employment levels advanced in 12 regions and fell in four areas. Employment was essentially unchanged over the month in the Kalamazoo-Portage MSA. Total employment gains ranged from 0.3 to 4.3 percent with the largest percentage increases displayed in the Northwest Lower Michigan region (+4.3%), the Upper Peninsula (+1.8%) and the Northeast Lower Michigan region (+1.5%) as hiring continued for the summer tourism season. Combined, these three areas accounted for an employment gain of nearly 10,000 in June. Employment reductions in the four regions were mostly minor with the exception of a 3.3 percent seasonal employment drop in the Lansing-East Lansing MSA.
Since June 2017, total employment was up in 15 areas with a solid median increase of 1.0 percent. The largest gains over the year were recorded in the Ann Arbor (+2.6%), Grand Rapids-Wyoming (+1.8%) and Monroe (+1.6%) MSAs. Over-the-year total employment decreases were registered in the Niles-Benton Harbor (-1.1%) and Muskegon (-0.5%) MSAs.
Labor Force Levels Up Over Month, Year
In June, workforce levels rose seasonally in 15 regions with growth ranging from 0.3 to 4.1 percent, and a median increase of 1.1 percent. The state’s three northernmost areas posted the largest over-the-month percentage gains. The Lansing-East Lansing metro area (-2.7%) recorded a sizable seasonal reduction, while the Jackson MSA (-0.1%) reported a minor workforce decline in June.
Since June 2017, labor force levels advanced in 13 regions, declined in two areas and were unchanged in the Battle Creek and Midland MSAs. Over-the-year increases were wide-ranging from 0.1 to 2.3 percent with a moderate median gain of 0.7 percent. Reductions were recorded in the Niles-Benton Harbor (-1.3%) and Muskegon (-0.6%) MSAs.
Seasonal and Tourism-Related Hiring Continue in June
The monthly survey of employers indicated that seasonally unadjusted payroll jobs in Michigan increased by 35,000 or 0.8 percent in June to 4,490,000. Private sector jobs in the state rose by 47,000 or 1.2 percent over the month led by seasonal job gains in Leisure and hospitality services (+18,000), Construction (+8,000) and Trade, transportation and utilities (+8,000).
Government jobs dropped in June as seasonal cutbacks occurred in State government education (-11,000) and Local government education (-6,000) with the beginning of summer break at area schools and universities.
In June, payroll jobs advanced in 12 of the state’s 14 metro regions with increases ranging from 0.2 to 1.7 percent and a median rise of 1.1 percent. Metro regions with the most prominent over-the-month job gains on a percentage basis included the Niles-Benton Harbor (+1.7%), Saginaw (+1.4%) and Muskegon (+1.2%) MSAs. June job reductions were posted in the Lansing-East Lansing (-3.2%) and Jackson (-0.5%) metro areas.
Since June 2017, seasonally unadjusted payroll jobs rose statewide by 61,000 or 1.4 percent. Twelve of Michigan’s 14 metro regions displayed job gains over this period led by the Ann Arbor (+2.9%), Grand Rapids-Wyoming (+1.8%) and Monroe (+1.6%) MSAs. Over-the-year job reductions were recorded in the Muskegon (-1.6%) and Niles-Benton Harbor (-1.1%) metro regions.
County Jobless Rates Up Over Month, Down Over Year
Sixty of Michigan’s 83 counties recorded minor seasonal unemployment rate increases in June, with a median advance of 0.4 of a percentage point. Twenty-one counties registered unemployment rate declines in June, while the rates in two counties were unchanged. In June, 20 Michigan counties displayed unemployment rates below the national non-seasonally adjusted rate of 4.2 percent. All Michigan counties in June reported unemployment rates below eight percent.
Since June 2017, unemployment rates declined in 71 counties, with a median reduction of a half percentage point. Jobless rates increased slightly in eight counties over the year, while the rates in four counties were unchanged since June 2017.
Note: Data in this release is not seasonally adjusted. As a result, employment and unemployment trends may differ from previously released Michigan seasonally adjusted data.
