Soil testing begins for Otsego Area Study project in Allegan County and Northwest Kalamazoo County

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) began soil testing for the Otsego Area Study on March 18, 2019. Samples will be collected from various locations that received land application of paper sludge and disposal of fly ash from the former Menasha Corporation’s Otsego paper mill operation. In addition, other locations where black liquor from Menasha was utilized as part of a road-binder program for dust suppression on Allegan County roads will be sampled as well. All samples will be analyzed for PFAS and Dioxins/Furans.
The sampling effort will take several weeks to complete. Once the laboratory results are received and interpreted, the MDEQ in conjunction with the Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), Allegan County Health Department, and Kalamazoo Department of Health and Community Services will conduct a public meeting to share the results with the community.
