City of Gaylord awarded MDEQ Grant

LANSING, MICH. A potentially contaminated property in downtown Gaylord will be redeveloped with a commercial and residential building with help from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). The city of Gaylord was awarded a $62,150 Brownfield Redevelopment Grant for environmental investigations to revitalize and safely reuse a parking lot in downtown Gaylord.

A parking lot that was previously a car dealership and service center will be investigated for potential environmental contamination. The grant will help the city of Gaylord determine whether past uses contaminated the soil or groundwater. Once the environmental condition is known, owner Go North Properties will redevelop the property into a 65,000-square foot building with commercial and retail space on the lower floors and apartments on upper floors of the four-story building.

The MDEQ partners with communities to protect public health and the environment and revitalize contaminated property. MDEQ grants and loans pay for environmental investigation and cleanup on brownfields. Brownfields are vacant or abandoned properties with known or suspected environmental contamination.

Partnerships between MDEQ and communities have created over $4.7 billion in private investment and 24,000 new jobs over the life of the Brownfield Redevelopment Program. Each grant and loan dollar invested by the MDEQ in 2018 to protect residents and the environment is expected to return an average of $42 to the state’s economy.
