Viant open house, public hearing scheduled to discuss draft consent agreement

An open house, informational session, and public hearing has been scheduled for Oct. 23 in Grand Rapids in the investigation of Viant Medical Inc. and the enforcement action against the company. Under a draft Administrative Consent Order, the company is to end sterilization of medical equipment using ethylene oxide by Dec. 31, conduct monthly air sampling through February, and pay a penalty of $110,000.
Staff from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy; Michigan Department of Health and Human Services; and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will make brief presentations during the informational session at Grand Valley State University’s Eberhard Center about the ethylene oxide issue as well as provide information about the enforcement action. The presentations will be followed by an opportunity for the public and stakeholders to ask questions.
The event will end with a public hearing on the draft consent order. A public comment period is now open and comments on the draft consent order can be submitted in writing until midnight Oct. 25 by mail to Jeff Rathbun, Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy - Air Quality Division, P.O.
