Michigan is in the process of transforming its Solid Waste Management Program to encompass all managed materials. This means rather than focusing on solid waste (trash) going into landfills, the state is working toward the highest and best use practices for all materials, including recyclables, organics, solid waste and other material types.

M3 Road Map Mega DataTo get there, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Environment (EGLE) needs help from communities across the state. County and municipal contacts responsible for local solid waste programs are encouraged to report their materials management information to EGLE.

This shift will allow EGLE to continue minimizing the impacts of the material choices made every day, and work to establish convenient, inclusive access to recycling, composting and waste reduction opportunities.

Municipalities will use eMERGE’s nationwide data collection tool, the Municipal Measurement Program (eMMP), while counties will use the EGLE County Measurement Program (CRMP). The information provided will be critical for future materials management planning and inform EGLE as it expands reuse, recycling, composting and other waste diversion activities across Michigan.

Communities are encouraged to submit an application and watch a short EGLE video  that provides step-by-step instructions on how to participate in the Mega Data Collection Project.

Sharing this information provides direct benefits to participating communities. For information on these programs and their benefits, check out these new resources for counties and municipalities.
