Great Lakes flooding

Contact: Mario Fusco 517-256-4458

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers determined design flood levels on the Great Lakes and connecting channels based on frequency curves of annual maximum instantaneous water levels.  The flood levels and the analysis are described in these two reports.

Note that FEMA has undertaken new coastal floodplain studies for the entire great lakes coastline of Michigan.  The first revised FEMA floodmaps were released in draft form in 2019.  These floodmaps will begin to go effective in June 2020.  The draft and effective floodmaps can be viewed online at: msc.fema.gov/fmcv
