Electric school bus joins electric vehicles at ride and drive in Lansing

Electric school buses, like the one on display at an electric vehicle ride and drive last week in Lansing, will start appearing on Michigan roads later this year, after the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) announces which school districts have been selected to receive grants for electric and alternative fuel buses. Of the $12.96 million in grants available under the program, $3.0 million has been earmarked for the purchase of electric school buses and charging stations.
The buses look just like regular school buses except they are powered entirely by batteries. They produce zero emissions, are quieter than their diesel-powered counterparts and transport students safely to school.
“As part of the new Fuel Transformation Program supported with Volkswagen settlement funds, the grants provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to improve air quality, particularly for children who are highly vulnerable to the harmful effects of oxides of nitrogen and fine particular matter found in diesel emissions,” said Debbie Swartz, Program Manager.
Watch for the bus at Constitution Hall where it will be on display at EGLE's Earth Day activities on April 24. It is also scheduled to be part of other activities in the Greater Lansing area through April 25.
